Proofreading
Proofreading is actually the last stage of editing, not the first, and is not an alternative to editing proper. It is the final check and polish to make sure that no errors remain after the copyediting process. Proofreading involves looking for such things as inconsistencies and spelling/grammatical errors, but no major changes are usually made to the text.
If your document requires proofreading, it will cost a minimum of $45 per hour, depending on the amount of work that needs to be done and the time frame in which to complete it. We can also negotiate a special rate for regular small proofreading jobs, for example a school newsletter. For a custom quote, please email Pure Prose, attach the document, and state the required completion date.

Copyediting
Copyediting is more extensive than proofreading, and some documents may require more editing than others. This is why the pricing for copyediting varies. Tasks undertaken during the copyediting stage cover spelling, grammar and consistency as for proofreading, but may also include formatting the document, reshaping the prose, reorganising the text, and correcting punctuation. (Note: Another, even deeper form is substantive or structural editing, but this will only be undertaken on an individual case-by-case basis.)
If your document requires copyediting, it will cost between $55-$70 per hour, depending on the amount of work that needs to be done and the time frame in which to complete it. The minimum charge is $55. For a custom quote, please email Pure Prose, attach the document, provide the final word count, and state the required completion date.
For a special combined package on copyediting and proofreading, email Pure Prose for your custom quote.

We charge an hourly rate for several reasons. Editing is more than changing words, and may involve time undertaking other tasks, such as making phone calls, formatting or finding out further information. Additionally, the time taken will depend on the quality of the document received – it will take longer to check each word and the formatting in a poorly constructed document than in a well-constructed one. Finally, the cost will increase if the client needs the edited document returned very quickly. Pure Prose, however, likes to make its payment system as transparent as possible. As a guide, a standard job will take an hour to edit every 1000 words (less words for in-depth editing, more words for a final proofreading).
Editing is usually completed in Microsoft Word using track changes. You will be asked to email your document as an attachment and to provide any necessary style guides. A style guide will help us to edit your document according to your needs. You can download our style guide template to assist you. Unless the document is in a special format, for example a marketing brochure, please download the format guide to help prepare your document for editing. You will have the opportunity to accept or reject the changes, and we are always happy to discuss everything with you further.
At Pure Prose, we use the following standards, tools and guides:
* Please note that Pure Prose does not accept undergraduate or postgraduate essays for either copyediting or proofreading.

Terms and conditions:
Confidentiality and Copyright:
Pure Prose will treat all documents with absolute confidentiality and will not disclose any content to a third party without the client's full knowledge and consent. Copyright, and therefore also legal responsibilities related to plagiarism and libel, remains with the client.
Guarantee and Refund policy:
While Pure Prose always aims to provide a high quality editing service and meet deadlines, it cannot be guaranteed that a job will be 'perfect' or that unforeseen events will not affect delivery of the service.
Potential clients can request a trial of services by having a small sample of the text edited for free (up to 250 words) before placing an order (first time only). Once an order is placed it cannot be cancelled except under extraordinary circumstances, and in such cases the minimum one hour fee ($45 for proofreading and $55 for copyediting) must be paid for time spent by the editor in providing the service. It is the responsibility of the client to make sure that the edited document meets with their expectations during the checking process. Clients have 30 days after the final delivery of the service to bring attention to any remaining problems. Refunds are not normally given, but if a problem is identified, Pure Prose will do its utmost to resolve it to the client’s satisfaction at no extra cost.
Payment of services:
Payment in full is expected upon receipt of the invoice and before the delivery of the final documents (one clean copy, one with track changes). Large jobs (20,000 words+) may require a non-refundable deposit of 20% before the work is commenced. It is possible to arrange a payment plan for large documents. The minimum price for proofreading is $45, and for copyediting $55 (the equivalent of one hour's work). For small but regular proofreading jobs, ask for a custom minimum price quote.
Payment types accepted:
At the present time, Pure Prose only accepts cash and bank transfer payments. Paypal is also possible (ask us how) by prior arrangement.
Prices are current as of April 2023 but are subject to change without notice. GST is not included.
